Hi, I'm Mary! If you're on the lookout for a math tutor who really understands how to make learning feel natural, you're in the right place. I specialize in helping girls in grades 3rd-8th build their confidence in math using intuitive techniques that meet individuals where they are. Girls build deeper connections to the material rather than memorizing facts and formulas.

I have a B.S. in Mathematics from Portland State University and for 6 years I ran my own company developing hands-on math curriculum for girls in K-8 through summer camps and after school classes. I'm patient and kind and can help a variety of learning styles. Math doesn't have to be scary! Let me help you feel empowered to tackle all areas of mathematics.

Why just girls?

A 2019 study revealed "by the time students reach middle school, more than twice as many boys as girls intend to work in science or engineering related jobs". While earning a B.S. in Mathematics I saw huge discrepancies in enrollment among male and female students and felt like I stood out from the crowd. When girls are identified as someone who "struggles with math", it's a mentality that sticks with them, but everyone has the ability to learn and succeed in math with the right instruction.

Why 3rd-8th?

Math has a wide-spread reputation for being the subject students hate. It’s not uncommon to hear “I hate math class” or “math is too hard” from students who are struggling. This often begins in 3rd grade as students begin to learn multiplication and get the impression that math is just about memorizing. I teach problem-solving techniques that connect students to the material and takes math off the page. These are the fundamental grades that are the building blocks to future learning.

What is intuitive learning?

Intuitive learning is a unique approach to understanding and retaining information that maximizes your potential for growth and development. It connects the learner to the material to make deeper connections about concepts rather than simply finding the answer to a problem. Intuitive learning has long term results rather than quick solutions. Getting the right answer on the page is not the goal, it's understanding what's being asked and how to tackle it.
